DO IT AGAIN,
LORD JESUS
We need another Great Awakening
by Harvey R. Brown, Jr.
Ennfield, CT
- Last month I visited the site where on July 8, 1741 Jonathan Edwards
preached his famous Great Awakening sermon, Sinners in the Hands
of an Angry God.
As I approached
the stone that marked the spot where the old Meetinghouse had stood,
my heart began to beat faster. I wondered what it must have felt
like to hear Jonathan Edwards read those words that called sinners
to escape the wrath that was to come. And I wondered what it was
like to live in an era when entire towns were converted...and the
name of Jesus was reverently on the lips of everyone in the community.
Kneeling beside
the marker to pray, I sensed that I was in an extremely historic
spot-especially in the spiritual realm. I began to thank Father
for how He had poured his Spirit into the life of the colonies.
For how He had raised up men and women who were fully-committed
to the Lordship of Jesus Christ-willing to bear the reproach of
a sometimes cynical and worldly church system.
Kneeling by the Jonathan Edwards Stone, my heart cried out....
Unexpectedly,
I began to sob and shake as I prayed. I felt like my heart was going
to burst and I heard myself crying out "Do it again, Lord Jesus!
Do it again! We need another Great Awakening... not only in this
land, but also around the world!"
I believe that
what I felt there is just a small reflection of Father God's intense
longing to have a people willing to receive His Spirit and walk
in revival. But it's up to us to prepare the soil of our hearts
in order to receive the revival that Father wants to pour out upon
us in preparation for His final harvest.
"If my people,
who are called by my Name, will humble themselves and pray and seek
my face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven
and will forgive their sin and will heal their land." (2 Chron 7:14)
Will you join
me in fervently praying "Do it again, Lord Jesus!"?
